The story of Dabbawal

HOME IS WHERE THE BEST FOOD IS

At lunchtime in Mumbai, bicycle-riding dabbawallas flood the streets, delivering fresh food to office workers across the city. Inside their glistening ‘dabbas’, or lunchboxes, are home-cooked treasures, made by families from recipes stretching back generations.

These exceptional delivery men have been championing the best of Indian home cooking for decades. When we started Dabbawal, that’s what we wanted to share with Newcastle – and we knew it had to be just as good as the food we grew up eating at home.

from the Onion

To this day, we cook home-worthy food ‘from the onion’. In other words, we make everything from scratch, in house, using the very best oils, best pans and time-honoured techniques our families would be proud of. We think this makes our food a cut above the rest – but the proof is in the puri.

Just like the dabbawalas of Mumbai, the city centre is where our story began. We created our pioneering restaurant concept in 2008, bringing the vibrant energy of Indian street food to Newcastle for the first time. Find us among the ancient cobbles of High Bridge, just off Grey Street, for casual food and pre-theatre dining in the heart of the city.
